Donny's Ramblings

My Friend David Talked Some Sense Into Me

My friend David is a die-hard Republican. He has been quite distressed about my public declaration that I intend to vote for Barack Obama in November. After trying many different methods to make me “see the light”, he took the time today to write out an email, appealing to pure logic and reason.

His email was entitled:

A Logical Analysis

Here is what he wrote:

Okay, Donny, let’s work this out logically without a lot of emotion.

If you vote for Obama….

You get this…..

But if you vote for McCain….

You get this…

I don’t know about you, but looking at this in a logical manner, McCain appears to be the better candidate.

ANY QUESTIONS?

Well, now that it’s been put to me that way, how do I argue with his logic?

  3. Honestly,

I am offended at the representation of Sarah Palin in this email and ultimately your post.

The very thing we want and serve God with all of our hearts to make a difference in: exploiting women and their bodies you have just supported in my opinion.

I am discouraged that this was your only reason for changing your mind.

  5. MT –

    Humor. Humor. Humor.

I have not changed my mind on my vote.

  7. I am on the fence on this election and I like the humor, I mean you have to say she is pretty good looking, vs the pant suit queen Hillary. People need to just relax about the whole thing. I think it is great you address this issue….it is the talk of my office is, Would you rather BINDEN or PALIN???

    The whole
OBAMA BIDEN is a little to close to
OSAMA BIN LANDEN for me, LOL and I am not sure we are ready for a guy with the middle name Hussain…but I am learning to deal with all of my “pre” judgements and just let the race continue. I personally don’t like either, but Politics itself is disgusting humor…

    I say lighten up 🙂

  9. It’s not the vote I was worried about it was the humor.

In addition to my feelings about this (what I consider to be) sexist post, unfortunately in a weak moment that picture could take a man out who is struggling for freedom of sex/porn addiction. Now… is that your fault? –NO. Could they find stuff far worse? –YES
But the point is people consider you “safe” now and in my opinion THAT is the problem… men who would not think they would have to be “guarded” at donnysramblings.com could be very easily taken off guard by this post.

Am I being legalistic? – Perhaps to someone who doesn’t hold the same heart that I do on this matter. So be it. I’m not the be all end all- these are just my thoughts and I wear them like my heart- on my sleeve.

I love you- you know I do- I just disagree with this.

  11. MT,

We at X3 church are still friends and supporters of Heather Veitch and her ministry, right? Perhaps we will have to reconsider?

There are lots of things that can potentially cause men to allow their minds to go down the wrong path. I know one man who told me that even driving by a field of cotton used to do it for him, as he would imagine the women’s undergarments that cotton might eventually become.

I respect your opinions, but disagree.

  13. Also, if a man is going to fall off the wagon over THAT picture, he better lock himself up in a room and never leave it. I see far sexier outfits on a daily basis while out walking, or even in Starbucks, or at Barnes & Noble, or…

  15. MT — visited your myspace page–as a guy–your profile pic may cause just as many men to stumble as this picture, seriously. I am not a “leg/miniskirt” guy, so the above photo doesn’t “do it for me” as much as your profile pic may.

  17. Humor, Donny? Yes, it’s sort of funny, but I sure can see where MT has a point. I was feeling “National Inquirer” over some of your posts recently, now we come to kiddie playboy stuff? Probably photoshop more likely.

Of course, this blog is open to the entire universe, but I wonder if you would share it with your seminary buddies…..??

And anon, you expect MT to go around covering her head with a bag? I thought her picture was very nice indeed.

  19. Jean,

I’ve been in churches where women are dressed the same as Sara Palin in that photo. A bigger deal is being made of this than it actually is.

As for seminary buddies… this, as you said, is an open blog. All of them know the URL. You’ll notice the post isn’t password protected.

  21. HAHAHA, love it.

However, I think the more serious point to make is, that is one horribly photoshopped picture!

  23. oh, dude.

i’m gonna try not to make a big deal out of this, but it’s also a women’s issue..I mean, it IS a symptom of our patriarchal society to find a way to degrade powerful women by stripping us of our clothes, implying that our value can always be reduced to the measurement of our body parts. It’s a constant, irritating jab in the ribs of women. It’s old. And I think we should rise about that. If you have time, read the blog I posted on Myspace recently about the crazy pageant for nuns. It’s titled :UNbelievable”. This reminded me of that 🙂

Also, let’s remember that she owns a rifle. Don’t mess with a women who owns a rifle. 😉

But aren’t you going to post that speech she made? I was extremely impressed!
McCain did a good job on his speech tonight, too!

  31. if Obama is such an agent of change, why did he tap Joe Biden to be his running mate? the man has been a Washington DC insider for almost as long as you have been born.

  33. Why does our society put the weight of a man’s lust problems on how a woman may dress. That in itself is sexist. There is something called admiration of the human body that has nothing to do with sex. I am disgusted at the “church” in general for promoting the idea that men must lust if they see anything other that a woman in a prairie dress. this post is plain humor. Not even close to bad humor. Yes it glorifies God in its humor. Pull the stick out of the ASS people;)

  35. I thought you were much bigger than this…… wow.

  36. I thought you were much bigger than this…… wow.

  37. Dalen,

I completely agree that men are responsible for their own actions and the way that they handle their lust. I also think it’s sexist to (1) put the blame on women for making men go “bad” and (2) expect less than full responsibility from men for the way they handle their lust, or any other emotion for that matter. I’ll never change the way I dress to help anyone else deal with their issues.

However, it saddens me–but doesn’t surprise me–that anyone would think a leather mini skirt, exposed bust line, and stilleto heels is the best way to flatter a woman’s body. That may be the world’s standard of “beauty” in a woman, but that doesn’t mean we should blindingly accept it as appropriate. If Christians can’t rise above that skewed image of women in society, who will? Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying women should stick to wearing long dresses and high collars in public. But, c’mon, if your little sister or beautiful mom left the house in the miniskirt outfit, you’d feel a bit uncomfortable.
    There’s a reason why.

  41. Let me clarify. That particular outfit in my opinion is white trash. Not even close to sexy. More like, “let’s go out and work the corner”. I was generalizing about the problem’s Christians have with skin. I as not appreciating biker outfit chic. Also for those not aware, Palin’s head is photoshoped in there.

  47. As dumb as this is going to sound, I really didn’t realize that photo was photoshopped. Sara was a model in the past. I assumed this was an old snapshot of her.

    Embarrassing to admit that.

  51. Wendy, my son’s mom, is my biggest critic. I just showed her this post, thinking she’d be mad at me (based on the reactions of the ladies here). She told me it was kinda stupid but didn’t think it’s that big a deal.

I feel better now. Was starting to feel bad there for a second. Whew!

  57. I’ve been doing some research, and sadly it is true that the Roe v Wade decision was brought to us by Republicans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Blackmun

The woman in the case (Norma McCorvey) never had an abortion. She gave birth to a baby girl and gave her up for adoption. She is now a pro-life advocate.
I was 23 during this time but was rather oblivious to what was going on in the world politically.

On another topic, wouldn’t it be nice if both sides just talked about their plans and what they would try to do for the country, and REFRAINED FROM SAYING ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT THE OTHER CANDIDATE?
    Just dreaming, I guess!

I too may change my affiliation to Independent. (But I still plan to vote for McCain.)

  61. A recovering alcoholic brings a bottle of water to his AA meeting. This person has a very dramatic story, and is in key places of influence now for advocating against alcoholism in his local areas as well as on a larger scene. Many in the AA meetings look up to him as an example of how someone’s life can dramatically turn around.

Only the bottle that houses the water is green, and it is obvious that it once held 12 ounces of cold Heineken.

Meeting-goers are offended, and the mere sight of a beer bottle causes meeting-goers to think more intensely about the beverage they have sworn off. They realize how much they used to depend on the alcohol to get them through their days.

“Gee,” thinks one of the meeting members to himself, “if *he* can have one after all he’s been through, surely it can’t be that bad. Maybe it’s OK to just have one.”

As people begin to question our friend the water-drinker, he says “look, see? It’s just water. You all KNOW I never drink that stuff anymore. It’s just the packaging that’s fake. See? It’s water! Take a drink — here, have some. Isn’t that funny, everyone?”

I think our friend the water-imbiber was very irresponsible.

  63. HMMM. Great Jesus parable there, Jered. Too bad you used faulty logic. You tried to take a large carrot, whittled into to a shape and size of an apple, painted it red, and then tried to compare them. Hey, your recovering alcoholic that’s going to AA trading one dependency for another, did he yank that Heineken out of the garbage or something? If so, hopefully he cleaned it thoroughly. It’s pretty easy to get communicable diseases that way.

To clarify for you, when Wendy said it was “stupid” she wasn’t talking about the decision to post the photo. She was just saying “that’s a stupid joke”, as in: didn’t tickle her funny bone.

People took this WAY too seriously. It was not degrading.

When I first posted it, I really thought that was photo was a real one of her, not a photoshopped image. That being the case, had I realized it was a photo shop I would not have posted it. But only because it wouldn’t have been funny to me. Not because I’m a stick in the mud, just because I only found the humor in this when I thought that was real. And not because it would have been a way to embarrass her, either, but because it would have been a WOW, type of thing, as in “Wow, she looks hot!” (there is nothing wrong with admitting that).

If nobody had raised much of a fuss it would be coming down anyway. But since so many have thrown such a huge fit about the photo, it’s staying up. Because it annoys me how easily offended people can be. In one of Bill’s sermons, Jean, he stated “Christians need to give up their right to be so easily offended”. It was a great statement then, and remains a great statement now.

  73. Donny, I am sorry but I have to agree with some of the others here. I don’t think that picture should have been posted here. You of all people, having been down the road of an addict as far as sex should know the power that even a seemingly harmless image like that can have on a person attempting to move on from their past.

And furthermore I would like to confirm this statement:

“unfortunately in a weak moment that picture could take a man out who is struggling for freedom of sex/porn addiction. Now… is that your fault? –NO. Could they find stuff far worse? –YES
But the point is people consider you “safe” now and in my opinion THAT is the problem… men who would not think they would have to be “guarded” at donnysramblings.com could be very easily taken off guard by this post.”

I was very much taken off guard by this, and being a recovering porn addict, stuff like it does cause me to stumble slightly there.

The last thing I need is anything that is going to lead me back down a path I want no part of. That’s what I’m trying to avoid, and seeing a picture like that, well it isn’t exactly helping.

  75. If you’re still reading this entry, Donny, I have to agree with Adam and his quote that your blog is thought of as a “safe” place to read and comment. I personally don’t think of the pix of Ms. Palin as tempting, just tacky, but I agree it has the potential to tempt and just might “surprise” some of your readers. Since for two years you have decided to follow God instead of porn, you might want to reconsider what you have done with this particular entry and how it touches others, especially your less mature brothers/sisters in the Lord.
    Love you!
